Taylor
Lockwood
Be sure to attend the September 4th NMMS Meeting, featuring the
incomparable artistry of Taylor Lockwood. We will skip the business portion of
the meeting and get right to the entertainment. Please be prompt. Same
time and place:
7:30 PM at the NM Museum of Natural
History.
If you have some good mushroom specimens for show & tell, please arrive a
bit early with them so we can place them on a display table before the show
begins.

Mushroom Hike with the New Mexico
Mountain Club
The hike on Sunday, August 12th, was an outstanding success. Although no
additional NMMS members accepted our invitation to attend, two dozen
fellow NM Mountain Club members joined Terri & me on a hike near Pajarito Ski
Area. Participants were amazed by the diversity of species we encountered.
While enjoying a leisurely walk in perfect hiking weather, Mountain Club members
learned about different types of fruiting fungus and their varying roles in
nature. We also opined the preference for proper terminology, explaining that
when encountering slightly buggy specimens, describing them as "inhabited
by invertebrate mycovores" sounds considerably better than "infested with
maggots."
Cerro Grande Post-Burn Survey
I had a fairly successful visit to the Burn Survey area on Wednesday, August
8th. The severe burn area showed no fungal growth. The mild burn areas were so
thick with grasses that fungal fruitings on the ground would have been difficult
to spot, although I did spend some time trying. The moderate burn area evidenced
the most noticeable fungal growth, with a dozen or so species appearing in some
abundance. I have a few more details available on the Aug 8 Field Trip report:

Field Trips
Other than the visit to Burn Study area and the Mushroom Hike described
above, I have not been involved with any other field trips since early June. I
have received numerous recent reports from members who have been out
successfully foraying, but these accounts have all come after the fact. Of the
last 4 mushroom related outings I have led, including two with visiting
mycologist Walt Sundberg, there was a maximum of 3 NMMS members
attending. To say that this is disappointing is a significant understatement.
If anyone else would like to organize or lead a Field Trip during the remainder
of this season, please let me know.

NMMS Annual Foray
The Annual Foray is almost here. We have almost 50 people signed up. There
has been recent rain in the area and reports of a few Boletus edulis and
a smattering of Chanterelles (more understatement). If
anyone plans to attend but has not registered or let Sharon or me know, please
call me (David Wallis) ASAP at (505)262-0830.
I hope to keep the Saturday Mushroom Tasting simple this year. Preparation
space is a bit limited. If any participants would like to cook up some
'shrooms, please bring an electric skillet or a saucepan and choose a species to
prepare. There is a 4-burner stove and oven (electric, I believe). I plan to
bring some butter and olive oil and a skillet.
Those who attended our last Chama Foray will remember where the field trip
locations will be: La Manga Pass and possibly the Hopewell Lake area. If any
folks would like to begin their Foray participation on Friday morning, perhaps
they should consider meeting at Hopewell around 10am. We will need a person to
be in charge of that field trip, the responsibility for which is primarily
designating a meeting time and place and being there to meet the other
participants. I would appreciate it if someone would take on this task. Please
let me know.
As a reminder, the Foray will be in Chama from 23-26 August. Foray
headquarters and primary lodging will be at El Mesón. The Foray fee is now $60 per
person plus forced servitude for registering late. Additional details are on
the Foray Webpage:
