New Mexico Mycological Society - December 1999
December Potluck
As most members know, we do not have a regular meeting in December, gathering instead for our annual holiday potluck. We will meet at Bill & Ellen Reed's house on Saturday, December 11th, beginning at 6:00 pm.
Mushroom dishes are the fare of choice, although any kind of recipe is welcome. Please indicate on a label or card the ingredients of your mushroom dishes. (Specify at least which mushroom(s) they contain.)
Dues Increase for Year 2000
I mentioned in last month's news NAMA's decision to raise dues for the year 2000. The dues increase will not go into effect until January 1st, which means that members may renew at this year's rate if payment is submitted by December 15th.
In order to take advantage of the lower fee, send a check (payable to NMMS) for $25, to Sharon Chong. Those renewing after Dec. 15th will pay $40.
NAMA Life Membership
I also mentioned last month that the cost of NAMA Life Membership will double (from $250 to $500) starting January 1st. Those wishing to take advantage of this should do so soon. One may obtain Life Membership directly from NAMA. If any NMMS members plan to go that route, please inform Sharon Chong.
Officers for 2000
Elections at the November Meeting resulted in only one change for next year. David Wallis will continue as Vice-President for 2000, but relinquished his position as Secretary, that role being taken on by Mark Kalin. Larry Weingarten will continue as President, and Sharon Chong remains as Treasurer.
New Home for NMMS Website .
Since its inception a few years ago, the NMMS Website has resided on my Webserver (Sorex) at Albuquerque TVI. However, because of increasing security concerns and network configuration changes at TVI, I will be isolating Sorex from Internet access. This means that I have had to provide a new home our Website.
I am now using space provided with my account with Sprynet (a subsidiary of Mindspring). The Members-only information is still on a TVI host (Fermi) so that I can continue to provide password protection. Some of the file locations may change again, but I believe that these will be largely transparent to the user. The current URL for our Website is http://owallis.home.sprynet.com/nmms.
Along with the change of location, viewers will also notice a change and standardization of appearance. I have attempted to simplify menus and page contents. I also plan to continue keeping the Newsletter as simple as possible. I have tried different combinations of Emailing copies to members, and have come to a decision on how to pursue this. I will Email a text version to all Email recipients. Contained in the Email message subject line will be the URL for the NMMS News Index. Most Web-browsing softwares will recognize this and display it as a "clickable" link.
For those members whose software does not provide this capability, I suggest adding the NMMS News URL to their bookmarks or "favorites" list. I don't expect the address to change from one month to the next, so it seems unnecessary to send it as a separate message every time I send out another Newsletter. Of course, if it does change, I will pass on that information.
