New Mexico Mycological Society - Meetings for 1998
Unless otherwise stated, NMMS meets the first Tuesday of each month, 7:30PM at the Natural History Museum.
  • January 6th - video by Dr James W Kimbrough entitled Cultivation of Shiitake and other Exotic Mushrooms in Taiwan .
  • February 3rd - Ellen Reed showed slides and talked about the trip she and Doris made to Turkey last fall.
  • March 3rd - Part 1 ( Life cycles ) of a NAMA slime mold video.
  • April 7th - Guest speaker Paul Chan, who spent five years as a naturalist working for the Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest, talked about his experience with Matsutake and the intracacies of commercial picking.
  • May 5th - Cinco de Mayo Party - Tequila, Tecate, & Huitlacoche hors d'oeuvres
    We viewed a video, Growing Shiitake Mushrooms in the mid-South, produced by the Shirley Community Development Corp. in Arkansas. It presents a good overview of all stages of Shiitake production and addresses elements of both small and large-scale operations.
  • June 2nd - Film: The Song of Mukhomor - a story of intrigue and suspense filmed in the wilds of the Kamchatka Peninsula. Free-lance mycologist Gary Lincoff joins an expedition led by the eccentric Doctor Salzman. Over steaming volcanos and across the vast tundra they travel in quest of the elusive spirit woman, Tatiana, who alone can reveal to them the deep secrets of the mystical Mukhomor.
  • July 7th - Film tour of Monterey Mushroom Facility - It appears that a few folks in California have managed to cultivate one of the world's most elusive and exotic fungi. Unknown until quite recently, these mushrooms have quickly become the star attraction at elite groceries and gourmet restaurants. Investigative reporter Larry Weingarten obtained exclusive footage filmed in Watsonville, California, where these culinary delights grow in abundance. Our July meeting featured Larry's provocative exposé of Monterey Mushrooms and their new mushroom species: Portabellas.
  • August 4th
  • September : Shiitake Video
  • October : The program was a video entitled Mushroom, "a 26 minute journey into an American passion for an extraordinary product of the earth."
  • November : John Corbin provided a detailed description of his processes for growing Oyster Mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). John also graced those attending the talk with gifts of mushroom kits.
  • December 13th: Holiday Potluck
