Meeting times for 1996 have changed to the third Thursday of each month. The January meeting will be at 7:30 on Thursday, the 18th, at the Natural History Museum.
During the December Potluck at Ellen Reed's house, the members present
held an impromptu meeting during which they finalized the selection of
officers for 1996:
Ted Stampfer has suggested a topic discussion at the next meeting. He proposes that we hold fewer meeting during the off months and offers a possible schedule:
NMMS thanks Carolyn Buskirk for her contributions to the society and particularly for her hard work as editor of the newsletter. Carolyn has decided to let someone else enjoy the rewards of typing, formatting, proofing, printing, folding, fastening, labeling, stamping, and mailing all those newsletters.
Beginning with this issue, David Wallis will edit and publish the newsletter. I encourage members to send comments or suggestions to my postal address or to the e-mail address below.
I have ideas of putting a NMMS homepage on the World Wide Web (a popular feature of the Internet). If time permits at the January meeting, I would like to present what I see as the pros and cons, answer questions, and hear the opinions of NMMS members. A Web page could make the NMMS much more visible, and a question we must consider is how visible do we want to be? To aid in decisions concerning this topic, I would appreciate a brief e-mail communication (just your name and e-mail address would be fine) from all those members who have Internet access.
In each future newsletter I hope to include at least one recipe. If you have any which you would like to contribute, feel free to forward them to the editor. Below is the recipe I brought to the December potluck. I'm including this recipe not so much because it's marvelous and wonderful (which, in fact, it is), but mainly because I had it typed up already and could easily incorporate it into this newsletter.
Heat oven to 425 F. Prick bottom of pie shell in several places and bake
for about 14 minutes, until edges are lightly browned. Brush crust with a
little beaten egg and bake 2 minutes longer. Remove from oven. Allow oven
to cool to 350. Heat butter in 10-inch skillet over moderate heat.
Sauté leeks and mushrooms in butter about 5 minutes. Spread in pie
pan over cooled crust. Sprinkle with cheddar and mozarella cheeses. Beat
together eggs, milk, salt, and nutmeg. Pour over cheeses. Bake at 350
degrees for about 35 minutes or until set.
